One Client's Story...

The Man
Who Made Me
a Man
Throughout my life, I
have had a multitude of
people help make me the
person I am today.
Ordinarily these people
consist of friends,
family, or teachers.
However, the person that
has had the greatest
influence on the man I
am today is a man named
Shaun Goodsell. Shaun
has helped me change my
negative aspects to
positive attributes, my
doubt in religion to
faith in God, and the
unimaginable to
determination.
Shaun and I first became
acquainted in February
of my sophomore year.
The overall reason for
our uniting was due to
my struggle with my
passion, hockey. My
sophomore season had
been a continuous mental
struggle, which affected
the amount of my playing
time. After meeting
several times, Shaun was
able to help me become
more patient and aware
of what I need to do to
change my mentality. His
tips not only benefited
my game, but also taught
me how to be a better
person through respect,
honesty, and
perseverance. Besides
our usual conversations
of the typical criteria,
Shaun and I talked about
faith. I told him I had
confusion about God and
my faith and he told me
that the beauty all
around in nature, the
small things in life,
and everyday miracles
has to have been by a
higher power. From that
point on I had increased
my praying from every so
often to each night and
gained an appreciation
for the little things in
life.
Shaun listens to what I
have to say like there
is nothing else that he
is concerned with but
me. I have never
second-guessed the
advice I receive from
Shaun and implementing
it in my life.
Shaun is always
encouraging me. When I
think something cannot
be overtaken, I am told
"Andy you have all the
gifts and talents I wish
I had". As always, his
words make me ready for
any obstacle. After
hearing this, I began
thinking that with my
talents it is not only
my duty to not just sit
around and waste what
could benefit me
athletically and
academically, but
through hard work
other's dreams could be
fulfilled through me as
well. His words inspire
me to continue to drive
and work for a starting
spot on the team. I
truly have been blessed
to know someone who has
taught me patience,
increased my
determination, and
helped me along my
journey of faith.
Without a doubt I know
Shaun has helped shape
me into the person I am
today. With his guidance
and optimism, I have
been able to overcome
any unexpected obstacle.
Every challenge has been
a test and has increased
my drive and will to
succeed. My next test is
college and I know with
everything Shaun has
taught me this will be
an obstacle I am well
prepared for.

Who's Got Your Back?
Shaun Goodsell, MA
Senior Performance
Coach
Shaun@MentalEdgeNow.com
What
is truly going to
make a lifelong
impact on the lives
of kids? I would
understand if you
responded by saying;
having a winning
season, having fun
with friends, and
progressing as a
player. What the
best bet is OTHER
KIDS! The quality of
experience kids seem
to have is dictated
by the quality of
interactions that
take place not only
while they are
together but also
when they are apart.
In my mind the
expectations of how
kids interact and
treat each other
needs to be raised.
Best-selling author,
Keith Ferrazzi, in
his book titled
Who's Got Your Back?,
boldly challenges
his reader to
purposely and
intentionally
cultivate deep
intimate "lifeline"
relationships. On
the surface his
challenge may seem a
bit tired and
somewhat idealistic.
However, we appear
to be paying the
price from the lack
of these
relationships all
over the place. Now
more then ever kids
are struggling to
work cooperatively,
live peacefully, and
mature. Families are
struggling to stay
connected and
marriages are
deteriorating at a
record rate. How can
a youth sports
experience actually
contribute
proactively to
changing these
disturbing
realities? Unless
team experiences
improve a whole lot
they will do little
to change the
direction of these
trends. For most
young people their
team experience
never goes beyond
simply showing up at
tournaments, games
and practices and
going through the
physical motions
without much
personal development
beyond this.
It is time we start
teaching and
challenging our kids
to build "lifeline"
relationships with
their teammates and
peers. What led me
to think about this
is over twenty years
ago I witnessed kids
building
relationships with
one another in a way
that inspired me and
brought me to tears
on many occasions.
Before coming
together many of
these kids didn't
know each other and
would not have given
each other the time
of day in school.
All they needed was
to be taught. We can
teach kids the most
complicated math and
science formulas out
there, we have
sixteen year olds
competing in front
of millions of
people for record
contracts on
American Idol, and
we have hundreds of
kids training to
excel in their
sport. Why can't we
challenge kids to
relate to one
another with greater
vulnerability,
kindness,
accountability, and
honesty? These four
vital principles
make up the
components of
"lifeline"
relationships.
Unfortunately, we
have a shortage of
all four on most
teams today. I guess
it would also be
safe to say we have
a shortage of these
in society today. I
recently sat with
another young person
that is quitting a
sport because the
"Team Chemistry"
that is needed to
complete the
experience never
came about, and
therefore, quitting
becomes not only
easy, but also
desirable. The value
of participation has
simply vanished for
many.
There is no doubt in
my mind that kids
are starving for not
only a sport
experience, but a
profound
relationship
experience. We as a
society invest
thousands of dollars
in the sport part of
the experience,
which in my mind is
the least important.
We need to be
intentional about
teaching kids to
practice the four
principles outlined
earlier. Practicing
these this will
leave more kids with
not only enhanced
sport skills but
also skills to
cultivate the types
of relationships
that they could
build a life on.

Training Control
Variables
Brady Greco, BA,
Performance Coach
Brady@MentalEdgeNow.com
Training season
is upon us and
now is the time
when athletes
begin to focus
on all of the
essential skills
needed to
improve their
overall game.
There will
always be
constant debate
surrounding the
most innovative
or best training
facilities,
programs, and
regiments.
However, whether
you train at an
Olympic training
facility or at
your local high
school's gym, it
is extremely
important to
focus only on
the elements you
have control
over. Many
times athletes
will worry about
things out of
their control,
leading them to
failure and
excuse making.
The hard work
you invest in
the summer is
tough and
painful, but
hopefully
rewarding.
Every workout
directly
correlates with
the amount of
success you will
see by the end
of your training
program.
Because your
workouts are
limited, it is
vital that you
get everything
out of them as
possible. This
may seem like an
elementary
concept to
grasp; however,
there are three
variables you
have complete
control over
that can make or
break your
personal
training goals.
Nutrition is the
first variable.
Nutrition is an
all too often
overlooked
variable that
can easily help
or hinder your
development
throughout the
course of your
training.
Eating the
proper foods
pre- and post
-workout is
essential for
allowing your
body to endure a
tough workout,
as well as
replenishing
your body when
your training
session is
complete. In
order to build
muscle and
become stronger
and faster, you
must break down
your muscle
first. There is
a fifteen to
twenty minute
window
immediately
following a
workout where a
protein bar or
shake will
restore the
broken muscle
fibers you
experienced
during your
workout. Many
people believe
that if you work
out really hard,
you can
basically eat
whatever you
want. This is
the quickest way
to waste a
workout. During
a workout, you
are constantly
breaking and
tearing little
muscle fibers
within your
body. For your
muscles to
become stronger,
protein will
embed itself in
these voids and
lead to more
muscle growth.
The second
important factor
for attaining
your training
goals is rest.
It is crucial
your body and
mind get the
proper amount of
recovery time to
allow yourself
optimal
performance
during your
workouts.
Training is both
physically and
mentally
draining. By
allowing for the
appropriate
amount of rest,
your body will
be able to fully
recover and your
mind will become
clear and
focused. Be
aware of what
you categorize
as rest. Many
times summer
activities can
be a workout in
themselves. In
these cases, I
stress the
importance of
knowing when to
partake and when
to pass. There
is a fine line
between too much
and too little
rest because too
much rest will
result in a
decline in your
progression.
Positive
thinking is the
last element you
must possess to
enable a
successful
training
regiment.
Athletes can
train ten hours
a day; but if
they have a
negative
attitude, they
will see very
little or no
improvement.
Nutrition and
rest play huge
roles in
determining the
outcome of your
attitude. If
you engage in a
proper diet and
get the right
amount of rest,
your mind will
be more clear
and focused.
This will give
you the ability
to have a more
positive
attitude through
the duration of
your workout.
If negativity
creeps in, it is
key you
acknowledge the
negative thought
and then counter
that thought
with a positive
reaffirming
statement.
Being able to
train your
thinking is as
important as
training your
muscles. This is
not to say you
won't have your
bad days of
training, but by
maintaining a
healthy diet
along with
proper rest and
a positive
attitude, your
good days will
drastically
overshadow your
bad days. By
controlling
these three
variables you
are enabling
yourself to have
a successful
summer of
training.
If you are an
athlete in the
midst of
training and
need help
controlling your
three variables,
contact Brady
