What they're saying about the Mental Edge...

I want to say 'Thank you' for your sessions with
my son Danny. The sessions were very helpful. I
know he learned a lot and found new ways to look
at situations. I think he is at the perfect age
to understand the connection between his
thinking and how his thinking can change his
results. With only 2 sessions with you, his
grades spiked upward on his semester final
exams. But the biggest news is that with the new
confidence he found from your sessions, he had
successful try-outs and made the golf team. That
has been a goal of his, and he is very proud and
excited.
We would like to return in the Fall, when
football, hockey, and the next school year
begins. I will contact Dawn at that time.
Thanks and keep up the good work!

Our experience working with the Mental Edge has
proven the additional life-altering benefits
that your mentoring offers in addition to just
the sport-specific goals you work on. It sounds
crazy, but I truly believe that Shaun was an
angel that came into our son's life to lead him
down the right path. We were all in a dark
place, crushed to think that his dreams might
have come to an end. We knew it wasn't life
threatening and we knew things could be much
worse. But we also saw a vulnerable, talented,
driven kid with so much potential and
commitment, on the verge of giving up and
changing his life path out of desperation. It
wasn't our place to try to convince him
otherwise because we knew what he had gone
through, but, we also knew the alternative could
be very detrimental to his happiness. Shaun's
approach truly was the answer, and the respect
that our son had for him immediately was
amazing. Equally important was Shaun's
willingness to take our phone call from a parent
you knew nothing about, regarding an ordinary 15
year old kid you knew nothing about and take the
situation
seriously enough to help him before it was too
late. This was impressive and very kind hearted,
considering the caliber of athletes that you try
to squeeze into Shaun's busy calendar. Thank you
from the
bottom of my heart for that! Hockey aside, the
life lessons that he has taken from this are
invaluable and life changing. His renewed
strength is amazing. The joke around our house
is that I need "a Shaun" in my life. I think
it's hardest on moms seeing their kids go
through tough times!
Thanks for everything!

has really had great focus! It's like he was
like his old self prior to going to the U when I
used to watch him as a junior. It's like my
real son is back! His progress has been fun to
watch. I hope you realize I think you really
helped and he does too! Thanks so much for your
time and effort. You'll always have a place
in our family's heart."

"When we first met Justin Johnson at a State
Bantam tournament a few years ago, he talked a
little bit about The Mental Edge. I remember
thinking to myself, "This is exactly what my son
needs!" My son, Nolan, was one of our team's
two goaltenders. He had good skills, but was
struggling with confidence issues and was having
difficulty dealing with adversity. Having
majored in Psychology myself, I was keenly aware
of the importance of mental preparation. On the
way home from the tournament, I talked with
Nolan about The Mental Edge. Always interested
in improving his game, he was very interested in
trying it out.
All of Nolan's goaltending training has been
valuable, but The Mental Edge training has
clearly been the most effective. I sat back and
watched, with amazement, as his game
consistently improved and his own satisfaction
with his performance visibly increased over the
next season. He was having fun again!
Consequently, I became much more relaxed at his
games. I began to enjoy break-a-ways, because I
knew he was going to make the save!
At the end of the season, Nolan received a
hand-written note from his coach congratulating
him on his performance during the season. The
coach went on to say, "Your consistency and
confidence improved constantly, as did your
skills." His team members and other parents
also noticed the difference.
Many of the mental strategies that he learned
from Justin to improve his athletic skills are
also excellent life skills that have helped him
to become more assertive, responsible, and
emotionally mature in his personal life. The
training he received from The Mental Edge was
not only the best investment I have ever made in
my son's athletic career, but also his emotional
development. I would strongly recommend this
program to any athlete, especially the youth.
My son and I are both very grateful that we
found The Mental Edge."

Mental Edge Past Athletes:
Where are they now?
Billy
Leier
currently is a senior at the
University of Minnesota studying
psychology and doing an internship
at Northwestern Mutual Financial
Network.
I
met Bill eight years ago at a local
coffee shop when this "slightly
angry, discouraged, and frustrated"
seventeen year old walked through
the door skeptical about what his
dad had got him into. It was only
minutes and Bill and I found
numerous topics to discuss that were
the launching points of a
relationship that has only grown
from that day forward. Bill played
high school hockey at Hill Murray
where he was a four-year varsity
player ending his high school career
as a senior captain participating in
the state tournament. Bill went on
to play college hockey at St. Mary's
and ended his hockey career by
playing one year at Hamline
University.
Bill's deep hunger for growth has
resulted in a maturity that is well
beyond his years. Bill would arrive
at the rink hours before each game
to mentally and physically prepare
himself for optimal performance. The
summer between his junior and senior
seasons he recorded shooting over
250,000 pucks. He gained the respect
of those he competed with by
exhibiting an incredible work ethic,
passionate leadership and a will to
compete that is unmatched in anyone
I have worked with since. These
characteristics have transferred
professionally as well, he currently
is training for a half marathon,
building a clientele with
Northwestern Mutual Financial
Network; getting into the office at
6:00 am and staying into the
evening. Bill is a man of integrity,
honor, work ethic and an intense
passion for what he does. It is an
honor to name Bill Leier as our June
Athlete of the Month!

Coming in July 2009!
Group Coaching for Hockey Players
Many young people seem to be
struggling to find the enjoyment
and personal fulfillment that
once drove their desire to play
hockey.
This trend has to stop!
For this reason we have created
an opportunity that will
challenge, train, and inspire.
Mental Edge announces GROUP
COACHING, an innovative
experience that challenges as
well as trains athletes in small
groups to acquire new levels of
personal experience and
fulfillment. Leveraging over
twenty years of experience
working with young athletes we
will equip them with the tools
to create and overcome anything
that stands in their way to
personal satisfaction and
fulfillment.
Group Coaching consists of age
related groups of athletes (up
to 10) that are led through a
90-minute dynamic learning
experience centered on the most
current concerns of those in
attendance. This learning
experience will help each young
player overcome the many
challenges that inhibit them
from performing according to
their skill level as well as
work through common social
challenges that negatively
impact their experience.
There are many group times to
accommodate varying scheduling
needs. One monthly fee covers as
many group experiences as you
want to have each month. We
believe the application of the
tools learned through the group
experience reaches far beyond
the athletic realm and could
possibly be the one thing
missing to empower young
athletes to develop the skills
to overcome and thrive in any
situation.
Benefits to GROUP COACHING:
1. Affordable
2. Athletes learning from
other athletes in a controlled,
safe environment.
3. New friendships.
4. Hearing other young people
describe the same challenges
they may be having.
5. Quality feedback given
young person to young person
leading to enhanced
relationships.
6. Significant opportunities
each month with each group
experience being different.
7. A safe environment for
young people to air their
concerns.
8. Mental Edge Coaches with
many years of experience.
9. Team Building.
10. Hearing multiple opinions
and choosing the plan that works
best for them.
Group Coaching
begins July 6, 2009.

Never Stop Dreaming!
Shaun Goodsell, MA
Senior Performance Coach
Shaun@MentalEdgeNow.com
"If
you can see it, you can achieve it;
if you believe it, you can become
it."
This was
the theme my class adopted my senior
year of high school and like most things
the meaning at the time sailed over my
head. Lately, however, I have been doing
a lot of thinking about people that
experience a high quality of life. This
could be an athlete that is extremely
satisfied in their role and sport, a
student that finds their niche and
excels beyond belief, a parent that hits
their stride in parenting their
children, or an individual that is
seeking to live a meaningful life. At
some level we are all trying to be
satisfied and for some living this way
seems way beyond their reach. This
article is intended to lay a foundation
for anybody to begin the work it takes
to find great meaning, satisfaction, and
fulfillment in life as well as sport.
Anything
we seek to attract, accomplish, or work
towards requires clarity. Without
clearly defining what it is we are
seeking it is virtually impossible to
dedicate the mental, emotional, and
physical resources to accomplish it.
Most of us have a general idea what it
is we are after but fail to bring our
greatest desires to a clearly defined
picture that gives us a point of focus.
For example, an athlete could say "I
want to increase my strength and speed"
both of which seem like great things for
any athlete. However, a clearer way to
say the same thing that brings greater
focus is "I want to improve my explosive
speed by one second in a forty and my
explosive strength by 10 pounds in my
squat," these give the individual points
of reference to evaluate their progress.
The quality of their progress gives them
information to evaluate the adequacy of
their efforts. Those that are investing
themselves in the challenge are rewarded
with results; those that are not are
confronted with a challenge to work
harder. If we used this way of thinking
around how we parented our children,
related to our spouses, and evaluated
coaches we would be better at evaluating
the quality of those things we hold as
important.
Second,
after the outcome is defined clearly it
is vital that we are determined to find
great value in the process of getting to
our outcome, not just the outcome
itself. In other words, the character
we cultivate and the personal learning
we engage in is where the fulfillment is
when chasing a goal or dream.
Encountering set backs, dealing with
barriers, and dealing with
disappointment and adversity is what
shapes us to handle the success we
hopefully will one day experience. Being
able to program ourselves to find great
joy, challenge, and learning during the
points of resistance along the journey
of realizing our goals and dreams is
where true champions are made. What good
is it to accomplish some success and not
be able to maintain it because our
character will not allow us to? For this
purpose I believe it is vital to find
meaning, fulfillment and joy in the
challenge. We can all be shaped by the
challenges we face and, as important, we
are shaped by those challenges we avoid.
Seeking them out and meeting those
challenges with our best effort and a
desire to develop our skills is where
the real value lies.
Third,
we need to redefine winning. Challenging
ourselves to grow our character, develop
greater mastery of the skills we want to
develop, and using those to accomplish a
clearly defined goal or dream is where
the big WIN is. Certainly when competing
we want to be number one. However, in my
mind winning happens when our character
is grown, our skills have improved, and
we have dared to find great joy and
meaning in the pursuit of something we
were not sure could ever happen. This
is the great value inherent in sports,
but also engaging in life in a manner
that makes us all lifelong athletes in
whatever goal or dream we are pursuing.
TODAY,
make a decision to clearly define a
dream, commit to finding joy and life
learning during the pursuit of that
dream and see winning as staying in the
fight for that clearly defined goal for
however long it takes. At the Mental
Edge we are helping athletes to clearly
define their dreams and, from the
pursuit, extract deeper character and
greater mastery of skills that comes
with staying in the challenge in the
face of setbacks and adversity.

Mastery of Skills: 4 Keys
Justin Johnson, BA, Performance Coach
Justin@MentalEdgeNow.com
As
school concludes for most of you and
a summer of possibilities await, I
feel it is important to identify
some key aspects of your mental
development that may enhance your
summer training and yield
significant results for you this
summer. One of the most effective
ways I can think of is by focusing
on the development of specific
skills. Now this may sound simple
enough and you may think you already
do this, but I'd like to clarify
some specific points.
First, by placing skill mastery at
the forefront of your summer
training it means that winning games
becomes irrelevant. If you are
playing games then the primary
objective is to display and evaluate
your skills. Secondly, by focusing
on skill development it helps you
decide how, where and when you will
train. Finally, focusing on skill
mastery as a way of training allows
you to develop four critical
elements of a mentally tough
athlete:
Skill Mastery is a key to setting
efficient goals.
When you take on the mentality that
specific skills are pieces of the
puzzle that make up the entire
picture you become primed to target
specific skills for mastery by
spending time and energy to develop
them. Because most physical skills
can be measured and defined it
allows you to set a plan to develop
and refine these skills. The
improvement of the skills you
identify leads you to the next key.
Skill Mastery is a key component to
the development of confidence.
Peak performance is all about being
able to execute skills in
competition. For many athletes their
confidence in their ability to
execute skills under pressure or
after a failed play diminishes in
competition. If you have put your
energy towards developing specific
skills your comfort level and belief
in your ability to execute those
skills increases dramatically. Once
you have built greater confidence in
your skills it allows you to refine
the next key.
Skill Mastery is a key to developing
focus.
As you grow in your playing
abilities you become aware of the
type of skills that seem to come to
you naturally or you identify
specific skills that lead to success
for you as an individual. One of the
most important factors in an athlete
being able to focus is their ability
to filter out that which is not
important to the outcome or mission.
By focusing on the skills you have
mastered it allows you to be better
equipped to focus on that which is
important and which will lead you to
the outcomes you desire. Maintaining
your focus allows you to be
successful in the next key.
Skill Mastery is a key to helping
athletes manage adversity.
Adversity will happen in the
majority of performances you
participate in. Accepting this and
expecting this puts you at a
tremendous advantage as an athlete.
By being able to draw upon your
confidence and by staying focused on
your objective you have set yourself
up for successfully managing
adversity.
By placing skill mastery at the
forefront of your summer plans, you
can expect greater results in more
areas, without spending any more
time than you would have originally.
Take time this summer to single out
a set of skills to master, then
practice, practice, practice.

Find "Your" Fun Factor
Brady Greco, BA, Performance Coach
Brady@MentalEdgeNow.com
How
can any athlete, young or old,
attain their optimal performance
state if they are not having fun?
The answer is simple, they can't.
It may seem as if "having fun" is a
simple concept to grasp, but through
research and many first hand
experiences, I can assure you it is
one of the most difficult elements
to fulfill. The number one reason
why any athlete will lose focus,
become negative, can't find their
"flow" state, and ultimately
contemplate quitting, is because
they can not find the love they once
had for the game, making it
impossible for the athlete to find
their fun factor.
Quitting has become an unhealthy
trend plaguing youth sports fields
and arenas. It is extremely
disappointing to witness adolescents
and teenagers quit a sport that has
the ability to educate and enlighten
them on more levels than they can
imagine. Youth sports create a
unique platform for kids to utilize
some of life's most valuable lessons
and skills such as: team work,
leadership, sportsmanship, proper
goal-setting, and dealing with
winning and losing.
To
fully understand sport however, one
must first comprehend its
definition. The dictionary defines
it as a fun, pleasurable physical
activity. It's funny how fun is the
first word embedded into the
definition. Sadly, the element of
fun can be lost in the snap of the
fingers, especially when dealing
with young athletes. There are many
theories of why this is true;
however, I have found through my 23
years of analysis, the fun factor
pertaining to sports directly
corrilates with the
player/coach/parent relationship.
In order to maintain fun while also
being successful; young athletes,
parents, and coaches must understand
the importance of a positive line of
communication. The communication
barrier between player/coach/parent
must be taken very seriously; it
should be broken down and practiced
rituously as you would a lay-up in
basketball.
While youth sports continue to
become more and more competitve at a
younger age, "fun" is usually one of
the first elements that deminishes
within the eyes of a struggling
adolescent athlete. The vital cause
that contributes to this loss lies
within the lack of communication
between player/coach/parent. In
order to attain your peak
performance state and regain the
love you once had for the game, you
must embrace the importance of
communication.
If
you are an athlete who is
contemplating quitting, lost the fun
factor and/or needs the proper tools
on how to become a better
communicater contact Brady.
